June 2008 TimberTrader News: eCommerce Connection

The internet has become an important enabler in many stages of a commercial transaction, from initiating a sale through a website, online advertising, using email to contact customers or offering information and taking payment electronically.

“While many aspects of simple e-commerce can be implemented easily, secure electronic data exchange between businesses require specific tools that allow software on different systems to communicate in the same ‘language’ without any interference from outside parties,” said Paula Gallo, managing director of Disprax. “This online communication opens up a vast array of business opportunities and is where the benefits of e-commerce are most prominent,” he continued.

Paul said benefits tend to be measured according to fundamental areas of costs and revenue. “The data exchange between applications allows massive efficiencies in business processing resulting in lower transaction costs to take and process orders due to greater efficiency; the potential to reach a wider customer base and earn greater revenue and increased accuracy of data through reduced human error.

“TIMMS eCommerce module can upload order details in seconds, removing any manual entry, saving time and ensuring accuracy. All documentation between trading partners and customers can then be sent online reducing the paper trail (and associated costs) immediately.

He added that many businesses are recognising the possibilities of the strategic investment e-commerce offers, “ . . . and TIMMS eCommerce allows an instant connection between an organisation and its customers, suppliers and other trading partners.

“The opportunities for new business and operational efficiencies are clear and the old adage of working smarter and not harder is most appropriate.”

November 2007 Timbertrader News: Keeping pace with technology

As the pace of technology change becomes more and more rapid, the emphasis on business to keep pace with technology has never been more important.

According the recent “Australian Timber Industry Technology Survey”, many Australian timber businesses are beginning to recognise technology as a means of achieving increased productivity.

The survey found that approximately 44 percent of Australian timber businesses had conducted a review of their business software within the past 12 months.

Surprisingly an even greater number of businesses had upgraded their software within the past 12 months.

These statistics indicate that successful timber businesses today no longer see technology as a cumbersome inconvenience; instead they are leveraging technology to its full potential.
